The U.S. Department of Education will provide a general overview of federal education programs that provide benefits and services to private elementary and secondary school students and teachers under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Blue Ribbon Schools, Green Ribbon Schools, Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools and other federal education programs. Participants will gain a general understanding of these programs and receive official Department of Education resources and materials. Attendees will learn about professional development opportunities for teachers and other educational personnel, programs for academically at-risk students, services for students with disabilities, resources for English language learners, programs to support schools following natural disasters, and how schools can gain national recognition through the Blue Ribbon and Green Ribbon Schools programs. In addition, attendees will learn how these programs operate at the local level and the responsibilities of their local public school district to consult with private school officials and provide services and programs that meet the needs of the private school students and teachers. Abundant resources related to ensuring the maximum participation of private school students and teachers in federal education programs are available on the U.S. Department of Education's website. Exploring these resources and knowing how to find them will increase the participants' knowledge and equip them with additional tools to help their students access programs for which they are eligible.
