What happens when we see young children as citizens in the here and now, not as future or hypothetical citizens? This interactive session will focus on various ways PreK teachers in a DC public school have cultivated civic agency in their students. Inspired by their participation in a project called Children Are Citizens--which brings together teachers and children from early childhood and elementary classrooms from across the city to explore ways to make the city a better place for everyone--they have developed projects based on their students' ideas about how to make the community a better place for everyone. Participants will hear about the origins of the project, explore lessons learned from developing partnerships with other schools and cultural institution partners, and engage with some of the activities teachers have experienced in professional development seminars.
