As educators, we know school must change but how? We are told that learning should be place-based, project-based, diverse and equitable, social and emotional . . . we are in a fog and it’s hard to see our way forward. Purpose Learning is a simple framework that integrates much of today’s school reform in a focused effort to help students understand who they are on the inside and how they connect to the world on the outside. Traditional learning is about thinking, or helping students develop key cognitive skills and content knowledge. Purpose Learning combines thinking with rich forms of feeling and doing, all at the same time. At the intersection of these three domains, students can drop into deep learning and explore purpose. We will see examples of purpose-driven learning at independent and charter schools and understand how these schools are changing culture, reinventing professional development, and creating new learning experiences. We will reflect on thinking, feeling and doing at our schools and what strategies for change we could pursue.
